• WHAT IS 4D?
The DFNZ is has launched a new programme called 4D that aims to, in a nutshell, empower New Zealand schools to crystallise their position on dyslexia and take charge of the dyslexic agenda by producing a written policy statement outlining their approach to this alternative way of thinking.

• WHAT WILL 4D DO?
4D will make progress on dyslexia transparent. It will enable schools to share best practice interventions and resources, and will give parents and students the opportunity to be part of the school’s solution.

Guidelines for 4D will evolve over time as schools join the programme and provide feedback. The aim is to ensure that this programme remains simple and easy to understand and implement.

• 4D PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
  - Create a structure that allows schools to benchmark their level of engagement over time
and against other schools in New Zealand
  - Create informed and empowered dyslexic students, parents and teachers
  - Give parents of dyslexic students information on which to base school decisions
  - Foster public understanding and acceptance of dyslexia as an alternative way of thinking
  that requires specific interventions

• WHAT DOES 4D STAND FOR?
4D stands for 'For Dyslexia' or alternatively, '4 Dyslexia'. The name is a play on 3D with the fourth dimension being creativity. And it expands the 3 Rs to include reading, writing, arithmetic and creativity. The fourth dimension is creativity!

• WHY DO WE NEED 4D?
Some 70,000 New Zealand children with dyslexia are currently not well catered for in New Zealand schools. And it's commonly accepted that there's a need for better interventions and learning tools.

4D will provide a mechanism for New Zealand schools to do something concrete about dyslexia by assisting them to formulate their policy and intervention strategies and share their knowledge by making their plans public.
